How to write your legislator:

bulletWrite on personal or business stationery - you can even make your own!
bulletThe contents must be legible, particularly your name and address - typewritten is best.
bulletInclude your return address on the letter.
bulletLetters should be no more than one page.

Address your letter as follows:

The Honorable Orrin Hatch
104 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington DC  20510

Dear Senator Hatch,

I am writing to voice to my concern about .....

bulletIn your opening sentence, specify the issue which has prompted you to write.
bulletIf you are writing concerning a particular law, identify the legislation by House or Senate bill number.
bulletBriefly explain and highlight your point for writing.
bulletExplain why you feel so strongly about the issue.
bulletBe constructive.
bulletUse your own personal experience in making your argument - how the issue affects you, your family, your business, etc.
bulletGive your own views, not someone else's.
bulletAvoid form letters and key phrases that indicate "coaching".
bulletA personal letter is much better than a form letter or signed petition - A personal letter is worth more than 100 form letters. Honest!
bulletDo not threaten or promise to defeat a legislator in the next election. Such assertions rarely intimidate a conscientious legislator and may generate an adverse reaction.
bulletYou may request a reply if you wish.  You may want to know his/her position on the issue or legislation. As a constituent, it is your right to request such information.
bulletThank you letters are remembered - since legislators get so few, yours will be remembered.
bulletIf he/she votes contrary to your position, let him/her know - this will also be remembered.
bulletClose with a smile and a thank you for their time and consideration.
Sincerely, -or- Respectfully Submitted,
(Your Signature)
(Your Name Printed)
