How to write your legislator:
 | Write on personal or business stationery - you can even make
your own! |
 | The contents must be legible, particularly your name and
address - typewritten is best. |
 | Include your return address on the letter. |
 | Letters should be no more than one page. |
Address your letter as follows:
The Honorable Orrin Hatch
104 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington DC 20510
Dear Senator Hatch,
I am writing to voice to my concern about .....
 | In your opening sentence, specify the issue which has
prompted you to write. |
 | If you are writing concerning a particular law, identify
the legislation by House or Senate bill number. |
 | Briefly explain and highlight your point for writing. |
 | Explain why you feel so strongly about the issue. |
 | Be constructive. |
 | Use your own personal experience in making your argument -
how the issue affects you, your family, your business, etc. |
 | Give your own views, not someone else's. |
 | Avoid form letters and key phrases that indicate
"coaching". |
 | A personal letter is much better than a form letter or
signed petition - A personal letter is worth more than 100 form letters.
Honest! |
 | Do not threaten or promise to defeat a legislator in the
next election. Such assertions rarely intimidate a conscientious legislator
and may generate an adverse reaction. |
 | You may request a reply if you wish. You may want to
know his/her position on the issue or legislation. As a constituent, it is
your right to request such information. |
 | Thank you letters are remembered - since legislators get so
few, yours will be remembered. |
 | If he/she votes contrary to your position, let him/her know
- this will also be remembered. |
 | Close with a smile and a thank you for their time and
consideration.
Sincerely, -or- Respectfully Submitted,
(Your Signature)
(Your Name Printed) |
Because of the way mail is handled in the
Washington DC offices, many people prefer to use the local (Utah) addresses.
However the same formalities apply.
